'We played well' says Moyes as he bemoans denied Welbeck penalty

Alex Ferguson would be proud.

DAVID MOYES INVOKED the bullish spirit of his Manchester United predecessor as he praised his side’s performance in losing 1-0 to Liverpool and claimed his side were denied a clear penalty.

The Scot sounded every bit like Alex Ferguson as he told Sky Sports that his team should have been awarded a spot-kick for a foul on Danny Welbeck in the box.

Welbeck tangled with Iago Aspas in the Liverpool box just under the hour mark of the Premier League clash at Anfield. There was a minimal crossing of legs but the contact did not seem enough to send the United attacker sprawling.

“I think it’s a penalty,” Moyes said. “[Aspas] kicks him in the back of the leg, if you look at it. It’s not easy for the referees to make decisions quickly but he kicks him in the back of the leg. What would be [Welbeck's] reason for going down? He had done well and dribbled through a couple of players.”

Asked to reflect on another defeat at Anfield, “Not a disappointing performance; not at all. We had long periods [of dominance] today but couldn’t score.”

Moyes added he was confident United could bring in a player target or two before the Monday closure of the transfer window but insisted his squad was strong enough as it was. “I’m more than happy with the players we’ve got,” he claimed.
