Magnificent McCambridge qualifies for Olympics

It wasn’t all bad news from an Irish fan’s perspective this weekend, as the runner gave us something to cheer about.

LETTERKENNY AC RUNNER Maria McCambridge qualified for the London 2012 Olympics, after running a time of 2:36:37 in Rome today.

McCambridge narrowly beat the Olympic A standard time of 2:37, after a strong finish to her run.

She is the third woman to achieve the Olympic standard recently, after Linda Byrne and Ava Hutchinson experienced similar success.

She becomes the 15th Irish athlete in total to qualify for London 2012.

In addition, Kate Veale of West Waterford AC won the junior women’s race at the Lugano Racewalking Grand Prix in Switzerland today, while Emma Prendiville finished 4th in the same race.

Meanwhile, Robert Heffernan came 6th in the men’s 20k race, Olive Loughnane placed tenth in the senior women’s 20k and James Treanor finished 5th in the junior men’s 10k race.
