MARTIN KAYMER TAMED Pinehurst on Thursday and, this afternoon, fed it a saucer of tepid milk.
The German, who won the USPGA in 2012, recorded a five-under round of 65 for the second day running at the US Open at Pinehurst Village, North Carolina. Kaymer carded five birdies and did not drop a shot as he made a mockery of a course that was predicted to produce a winning, four-round score of level par. He finished on -10 for his two rounds.
The chasing pack is dominated by Americans, with Brendon Todd at -4 and both Kevin Na and Brandt Snedeker on -3.
Graeme McDowell started with a birdie but endured a tortuous time of it thereafter. The Portrush native carded four bogeys and a double bogey six on the 18th [his ninth hole].
US Ryder Cup stars Keegan Bradley and Dustin Johnson are both in the clubhouse on two-under after shooting consecutive, respective rounds of 69 over the opening two days. Rory McIlroy [-1] teed off alongside McDowell while Phil Mickelson shot a 73 to stand on +3 after his opening rounds. Henrik Stenson is -2 while Adam Scott is on level par.
Shane Lowry was over the projected cut line of +4 by two shot after carding a 73 for the second day in a row. Darren Clarke’s round of 72 was an improvement on Thursday but he eventually finished on +7 for his two rounds.
