Gunners legend says Mesut Ozil wouldn't have made Arsenal's 'Invincibles' team

The Germany international wouldn’t have started for the 2003/04 side, according to Martin Keown

MESUT OZIL WOULD not have been good enough to get into Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ starting XI, claims club legend Martin Keown.

The Gunners won 26 games and had 12 draws during their famous 2003/2004 Premier League season, thus going unbeaten.

And Keown, who was largely used as a substitute during their run, claims Ozil – a World Cup winner — wouldn’t have displaced Dennis Bergkamp in the team.

Ozil would not get in [to the Invincibles XI],” Keown said. “It would be a choice between Ozil and Dennis Bergkamp.

“Dennis played in the same position but he would start higher up the pitch and then drop. Ozil starts deep and you don’t know when he is coming or going.

We saw it against Chelsea — Sanchez is saying, ‘Come on,’ but Ozil does not really want to go and press.”

Keown was speaking out in the aftermath of Arsenal’s dismal 3-1 loss to Chelsea on Saturday, a game that largely passed Ozil by.

Arsenal’s current form is in stark contrast to their predecessors — Ozil and his team mates are 12 points adrift of the league leaders.
