THE INTERNATIONAL BETWEEN Netherlands and France on Friday was halted in the 14th minute for an unprecedented tribute to Dutch football legend Johan Cruyff, one day after his death.
A giant banner showing the back of Cruyff in his number 14 shirt was hauled up by Dutch fans in the Amsterdam ArenA. Players and the packed stadium applauded for one minute before play resumed.
Cruyff, who played for Ajax Amsterdam before moving to Barcelona, died on Thursday from lung cancer at the age of 68. Netherlands were losing 2-0 when the tribute was staged.
