Cork hurlers suffer blow as talented forward Padraig Power is ruled out for the year

The Blarney man suffered an ACL tear and a dislocated shoulder in the same collision against Limerick.

CORK FORWARD PADRAIG Power has been ruled out for the inter-county season with a cruciate ligament injury.

The Blarney club man suffered the blow in last Saturday’s draw with Limerick, also dislocating his shoulder in the same collision.

The Rebels had hoped that Power would be able to return from the shoulder dislocation within six weeks but the 23-year-old forward was subsequently diagnosed with an ACL tear having been included in Pat Ryan’s 37-man panel for the 2025 season.

Power missed the start of the 2024 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

The former U20 star’s latest double-injury blow came after Power hit 1-4 from play in The Rebels’ league opener against Wexford.

Power’s long-term absence comes as a significant blow for Pat Ryan’s Cork, with fellow young forward Ben Cunningham already ruled out for three months with a hamstring injury sustained during a Fitzgibbon Cup game with UCC.

Rebels boss Ryan told The Echo that Power “did so well last year when he was out for much of the year, but battled his way back in and came on in the All-Ireland semi-final”.

“He was obviously hoping to kick on from that and we were hoping he would too,” Ryan added. “He was very good against Wexford and it’s just a shame, but the main thing is that he makes a full recovery.”

Power’s rehab will be overseen by his fellow Blarney man, Joe Jordan, and Ryan expressed his hope that the forward would be able to return at some point during the club’s county championship campaign.

Power won two All-Ireland U20 medals with Cork in the calendar year of 2021: he scored 1-1 in the Covid-delayed 2020 final against Dublin and registered 1-5 in the following season’s decider against Galway, which took place only a month later.
