ITALIA 90 OR USA 94? Mayo or Donegal? Barry’s or Lyons?
The legend that is Ooh Aah Paul McGrath took the time to answer some burning questions on Twitter this morning. Here are 15 things we learned about him today.
1. He enjoyed Italia 90 more than USA 94 “by far”.
2. He once came close to signing for Tottenham Hotspur.
3. If he had a choice before joining Manchester United, he would rather have won an All-Ireland with Dublin than the Irish Open.
4. Kevin Moran was his favourite centre-half partner for Ireland. At club level, it was Danish international Kent Nielsen who played for Aston Villa from 1989 to 1991.
5. Gordon “Sid” Cowens was easily the best player he ever played with at Aston Villa.
6. He’ll be supporting Mayo “with tears in [his] eyes” in Sunday’s All-Ireland Football final, despite the fact that they beat his beloved Dubs in the semis.
7. He’s going for Kilkenny over Galway in the hurling replay.
8. He reckons Aston Villa will beat Southampton 3-1 on Saturday (although this could be a joke).
9. If you’re going to the Ploughing Championships in New Ross, keep an eye out for him. He plans on making an appearance.
10. After retiring, he never considered going into coaching or management as it is too stressful.
11. Muhammad Ali is his all-time favourite sports hero: “Still the king.”
12. He won’t say if he prefers Doug Ellis or Randy Lerner as Aston Villa owner because he wants to be able to go back to Villa Park.
13. If you’re making him a cuppa, it’s coffee please. He artfully sidestepped the whole Barry’s v Lyons tea debate.
14. Mariettas are his favourite type of biscuit.
15. If he was still playing, not even he would be able to stop Lionel Messi.
