Post-match analysis: Counihan praises O'Neill, as Horan criticises referee

The Mayo manager claimed Cork’s second goal shouldn’t have been allowed in yesterday’s NFL final.

CORK MANAGER CONOR Counihan has paid tribute to the contribution of Colm O’Neill in helping his side win the National Football League.

The player only recently recovered from a cruciate injury, yet delivered an excellent performance, as Cork beat Mayo yesterday.

And speaking to RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Counihan said:

“When we are in training or in any match there is not anybody else you want to see at the end of the ball in terms of a goal-scoring chance.

“It is fantastic for him because it was 12 months of hard work to get back here and it was a great performance.”

But despite Cork’s win, Counihan expressed disappointment that his side failed to “wake up” until the second half.

Meanwhile, Mayo manager James Horan told RTÉ that he wasn’t happy with a key refereeing decision.

Horan claimed his side should have been awarded a free in the build-up to Cork’s second goal.

“Lee Keegan was going through and in my opinion it was a blatant free. We didn’t get it and they went straight down and got a goal. That was a real blow. There was still time left but we didn’t really go after it after that.”

Nonetheless, in spite of this questionable decision, Horan admitted his side failed to play to their full potential in yesterday’s match.
