Premier League mop-up: City falter as Liverpool's revival continues

There were wins for Spurs, Liverpool, Bolton, Fulham and West Ham on a busy night of cross-channel action.

WE REALLY HAVE been spoilt with a full programme of midweek games over the last two nights.

Fortunately for those of us who have to sum up the night’s action neatly, there was no repeat of last night’s goal glut. There was, however, more than enough action and incident to keep me occupied for the last couple of hours. Read on for this evening’s footy highlights.

Premier League Results

Birmingham 2-2 Man City: A bad night for City at St. Andrew’s. Mancini’s men let another two points slip away as they continue to drop off the pace at the league’s summit.

Blackburn 0-1 Tottenham: Another narrow win for Spurs as they keep the pressure on Chelsea in the race for the Champions League spots. Crouchie got the only goal, but sadly, there was no reappearance of the robot dance.

Blackpool 1-3 West Ham: Robbie Keane won the affections of the travelling support with a goal as the Hammers dragged themselves off the foot of the table.

Bolton 1-0 Wolves: Loan signing Daniel Sturridge got the only goal of this one, seeing off his uncle Dean’s former club.

Fulham 1-0 Newcastle: The Toon Army will have to get used to life without Andy Carroll very quickly. They looked toothless going forward as a sole Damien Duff goal won this one for Fulham.

Liverpool 2-0 Stoke: New boy Luis Suarez grabbed a goal as a second-half sub, helping King Kenny’s men make it three wins on the bounce.

Game of the Night

Birmingham once again proved why a trip to St. Andrew’s continues to be one of the most unenviable dates in any Premier League side’s calender.

Alex McLeish’s side twice dragged themselves back from a goal down, Craig Gardner levelling matters from the spot with just 13 minutes left on the clock.

City now find themselves eight points off rivals Manchester United having played a game more than their neighbours. Uh oh …

Goal of the Night

That award has to go to Aleksandr Kolarov for his beautiful first-half free kick. Ben Foster might be a little bit disappointed not to have got down to it, but it was a sweet, sweet strike from the Serbian.

Facepalm of the Night

Blackpool goalkeeper Richard Kingson didn’t exactly cover himself in glory, letting Victor Obinna’s low drive squirm through his hands and legs for West Ham’s opener. Game changer?

Controversy of the Night

The kind of controversy that only Liverpool fans will be worried about. Did their new £23m man mark his debut with a goal or does this one go down as an Andy Wilkinson o.g.? It’s Suarez’s for the moment but the FA Technical Committee will almost certainly take it back from him once they’ve had a chance to have a look.

Tweet of the Night

Here’s hoping, for Ireland’s sake if not for West Ham’s.
