Richard Dunne set to face Russia

Phew. Dunne’s looking fit for Friday’s clash with Russia.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND boss Giovanni Trapattoni has been boosted by the news that defender Richard Dunne looks set to be fit for Friday’s clash with Russia at the Aviva Stadium.

The Aston Villa defender missed training on Wednesday with a knee injury, but a scan has revealed no major problems and Dunne is set to return to training in Malahide today ahead of the Euro 2012 qualifier.

The 31-year-old has been an integral part of Trapattoni’s defence, with Ireland conceding just seven goals in their last eight qualifiers.

Although he may not be one hundred per cent for the Russia game, Dunne can count on the support of defensive partner Sean St Ledger, who jokingly told the Irish Times:

Ah, I’ll give him a cuddle later! Nah, I’m sure he will be fine to play even if he has a little problem with his knee. He’s a big strong lad. We certainly need him, he’s a major part of what we are trying to achieve.

Obviously for me to play alongside someone like him with that sort of experience is vital. He’s got that experience and know-how and he’s played in the Premier League for a long time and done brilliantly.

Republic of Ireland have made a good start to their campaign with two wins from two and a win over Russia on Friday would put them in firm control of Group B.
