ROB ELLIOT’S EURO 2016 dream is over after it was confirmed that he suffered a serious knee injury and will be sidelined for “several months.”
The Ireland goalkeeper was stretchered off after twisting his knee against Slovakia last night, and Newcastle confirmed that he has damaged his anterior cruciate ligament.
“He will now commence a programme of treatment and rehabilitation,” a statement read.
Regrettably, the severity of this injury will rule Rob out for a number of months.
“Everyone connected with Newcastle United wishes Rob the very best for his recovery.”
The injury not only cruelly ends Elliot’s chances of playing at his first European Championships but also plunges the relegation-threatened Magpies into even more keeper trouble.
First-choice goalkeeper Tim Krul is also injured for the rest of the season, leaving new boss Rafa Benitez with Karl Darlow and Freddie Woodman as his most likely options ahead of Saturday’s six-pointer in Norwich.
Elliot, 29, had his chance to stake a claim for the number one shirt in the 2-2 draw at the Aviva Stadium, but twisted his right knee as he tried to keep out Miroslav Stoch’s opening goal.
“Thank you to everyone for their kind messages,” he tweeted this afternoon.
“Will come back stronger! Feel so lucky to have so much support behind me. Love to everyone
“Massive thank yous to everyone at @FAIreland and @NUFC for looking after me so brilliantly last 24 hours.”
