Scottish rugby star to stand trial on assault charges

Max Evans is accused of assaulting a man in an Edinburgh nightclub in August 2010.

SCOTTISH CENTRE MAX EVANS looks set to stand trial before the end of the year as a hearing into assault allegations against him reconvened in Edinburgh today.

Evans, 27, was charged with serious assault after he allegedly hit Alasdair McCaig in the face with a glass in the Lulu nightclub in August 2010. The star denies the charges and has pled not guilty.

A trial was initially set for 30 May but the case was subsequently adjourned by the Edinburgh Sheriff Court in order to allow Evans, now playing with French club Castres, to travel to the Rugby World Cup.

The trial had been refixed for 7 November, but at a two-minute long hearing this morning, both prosecution and defence teams asked that the date be used to resolve any outstanding legal issues, BBC reports.

Evans, who spoke only to confirm his name, was granted a continuation of his bail.
