SHANE MCELENEY IS embarking on a new challenge in North America as he joins Canadian outfit Ottawa Fury ahead of the 2017 season.
The 25-year-old defender, who previously played for St Patrick’s Athletic and Derry City in the League of Ireland, links up with Paul Dalglish’s side as they look ahead to the new United Soccer League (UCL) campaign.
“I’m overwhelmed to be signing with Ottawa Fury FC, I can’t wait to get started,” McEleney told the club’s official website.
“I needed a change in my career and when I spoke to Paul about his plans for the club’s USL debut season in 2017 it got my attention from the get-go.
“His enthusiasm for the coming season was just what I wanted to hear,” continued the former Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland youth international.
“I’m excited to say the least and looking forward to meeting the players, staff and fans come February. Let’s hope the 2017 season is a memorable one.”
In joining Fury, McEleney is treading a path previously worn by former League of Ireland players Richie Ryan and Colin Falvey, who played for the club during their time in the North American Soccer League (NASL).
Meanwhile, former St Patrick’s Athletic midfielder James Chambers will remain in North America in 2017 after signing a “multi-year deal” with Bethlehem Steel.
