The story behind that brilliant picture of Kilkenny keeper David Herity in the rain

We speak to Inpho’s photographer Cathal Noonan about his famous snapshot.

I TOOK THIS photograph during the All Ireland Hurling Semi-Final at Croke Park between Kilkenny and Limerick in August.

I actually remember little about the match itself as the weather was some of the worst conditions I’ve ever worked in.

During a high profile match like this you need to send images back to the office as the match is going on. So between trying (and failing) to keep my camera gear dry I’m also having to wire images from my laptop which is underneath a bin liner bag beside me on the ground.

This shot was when the rain was at its heaviest. It only lasted for about five minutes so there was a very small window to get a good weather shot that highlighted the freak conditions.

Luckily I managed somehow to capture Kilkenny goalkeeper David Herity attempting to stop the sliotar from going over the bar. I had no idea how good the photograph was until I got back to the photographers room after the match and went through the rest of my photos.

This frame immediately jumped out at me and I knew I had something special.
