Spurs target 2012 Olympic stadium

Tottenham Hotspur set to battle it out with West Ham United for the London 2012 Olympic stadium

Tottenham Hotspur could be set to battle it out with West Ham United for London’s 2012 Olympic stadium after submitting a formal interest in the 80,000 seater venue.

The move comes despite Spurs being granted planning permission by Haringey council on Thursday to build their own 56,000 seater stadium in North London.

The club have registered their interest in the Olympic stadium as a potential fallback with AEG, the American entertainment conglomerate that runs the 02 Arena in London, also involved with Spurs’ bid.

Their chairman Daniel Levy says they are exploring all options:

It is only prudent and good management that we ensure that we investigate all possible options for the club

The proposal is likely to be met with anger from Spurs fans who would be reluctant to see their club move across London.

The move is also unlikely to find favour with West Ham who remain favourites to take over the stadium after the 2012 games, converting it into a 60,000 seater venue that will retain the running track.

The idea is that the stadium could play host to a number of sporting events potentially including the 2015 athletics World Championships, the 2018 World Cup, the 2015 Rugby World Cup and even Twenty20 cricket, according to the London Independent.

The ultimate decision lies with the UK government and the London Mayor’s office who will act on recommendations from The Olympic Park Legacy Company.

The cost of readying the stadium for football is estimated at around £150m. However some of that would come from the Olympic Delivery Authority who will prepare the site for handover after the Games. The stadium is costing £537m to build.
