Stiliyan Petrov plans to return to professional football after full recovery from leukaemia

The 36-year-old says he is ready to make a comeback and wants to do so with Aston Villa next season.

STILIYAN PETROV HAS announced his intention to return to professional football and hopes to do so with Aston Villa in the Championship next season.

Petrov’s playing days were sadly cut short after he was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2012 but the 36-year-old is planning a comeback after three years of intense treatment.

The former Bulgaria international has set his sights on training with Villa during pre-season with a view to earning a permanent contract as the club plots an instant return to the Premier League.

Speaking at the launch of his golf day for the Stiliyan Petrov Foundation, he said: “I have looked after myself quite good and I think I have a big shot.

“Villa’s new manager will come in and I will run this through him. But I plan to train in pre-season and take it from there.

“I have spoken to a couple of managers but have always said Villa will be my first option.”

Petrov made 218 appearances in all competitions for Villa between 2006 and 2013 and is still held in the highest regard amongst the club’s supporters.
