WATCH: Frankel sublime as he puts Canford Cliffs to the sword

Henry Cecil’s three-year-old made it eight wins from eight with a five-length victory in the Sussex Stakes.

IT WAS ONE of the most eagerly-anticipated races of the season — and it didn’t disappoint.

Superstar miler Frankel took advantage of an eight-pound weight allowance to win the Qipco Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, storming to a comfortable five-length victory over last year’s champion, Canford Cliffs.

Forced to make all the running himself in the early stages, Tom Queally got the perfect response when he finally asked the question of his mount, with the three-year-old powering home to his eighth win from eight starts.

Godolphin contender Rio de la Plata came home in third with Freddy Head’s Rajsaman propping up the four-horse field.

Speaking afterwards, trainer Henry Cecil was full of praise for his star performer.

“I did think he could win very easily, but I thought I’d let the horse do the talking.

I think he’s the best I’ve ever seen.

A delighted Queally echoed the trainer’s sentiments, saying “he’s absolutely amazing. I’ve said it before – he’s a freak.

He made the other horses look ordinary and they are very good horses.

Frankel’s next outing is likely to be the 1m2f Juddmonte International Stakes at York on 17 August — his first start at over a mile — before connections decide whether to give him one final seasonal outing in either the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes or the Champion Stakes.
