WATERFORD EDGED CLOSER to promotion to the Premier Division tonight, after beating Wexford 3-0 in Ferrycarrig Park.

Two Mark O’Sullivan goals gave the visitors a comfortable half-time lead, before John Martin’s effort sealed victory 15 minutes from time.

Alan Reynolds’ side could be confirmed as First Division champions as early as tomorrow night, if second-place Cobh Ramblers fail to beat Cabinteely, with Stephen Henderson’s side eight points adrift of the league leaders with three games to play.

Elsewhere tonight in Irish football’s second tier, Shelbourne beat bottom side Athlone 4-1 at Tolka Park to go fifth in the table.

Dayle Rooney gave Shels the lead, before Sean Byrne and substitute Dylan Grimes added to their advantage.

Claudio Silva scored a consolation for the visitors, before Derek Prendergast wrapped up a comprehensive win for his side.
