West Ham 0-2 Man United

Hello, and welcome to today’s liveblog.

Here are the teams…

West Ham: Adrian, McCartney, Nolan, Tomkins, Carroll, Taylor, Noble, Collins, Demel, Diame, Downing.

Manchester United: De Gea; Rafael, Jones, Carrick, Buttner; Mata, Fletcher, Fellaini, Young; Kagawa; Rooney.

A depressing stat for United fans…

We’re underway…

Fellaini meets Ashley Young’s cross with his head, but Andy Carroll is on the line to clear it.

Promising start for United.

GOAL FOR MAN UNITED!

Man United 1-0 West Ham: Unbelievable goal from Wayne Rooney (6 mins).

As David Beckham watches from the stands, the ball bounces to the England striker just inside the West Ham half, he spots the goalkeeper off his line and succeeds with an audacious attempt.

Despite their goal, United aren’t completely on top at the moment.

Andy Carroll’s physicality is consistently causing their defence problems.

Sky tells me that was Rooney’s 211th goal.

Only Denis Law and Bobby Charlton now have scored more.

Here’s a look at that Rooney goal now…

West Ham continue to pose United problems without creating big chances.

They currently have United pinned back into their half and have been launching some testing balls into the area for the defence to deal with.

The ball falls to Mata on the edge of the box and Adrian is forced to make a good save from his powerful shot.

GOAL FOR MAN UNITED!

Man United 2-0 West Ham: Awful defending from Mark Noble, as he attempts to clear the ball, but it deflects off Wayne Rooney and goes into the net (32 mins).

West Ham had wanted a penalty down the other end, but Kevin Nolan appeared to go down easily following a goalmouth scramble.

It’s been quiet enough since that second goal.

West Ham continue to work hard and harry United, and they have enjoyed plenty of possession — they just don’t currently carry any real threat going forward.

Mata beautifully finds Rooney on the edge of the area, but the striker badly fluffs his shot.

He won’t be getting that hat-trick before half-time anyway.

HALF-TIME: WEST HAM 0-2 MAN UNITED

Dwight Yorke reckons Wayne Rooney’s effort was better than David Beckham’s famous Wimbledon strike.

So half-time and it’s been an ordinary enough game lit up by that fantastic Rooney goal.

United look well in control and deserve their lead, though they haven’t had to play especially well.

West Ham, however, have been disappointing. They lack guile in attack — United have dealt with their long balls up to Andy Carroll relatively well. And the Hammers were defensively inept if not for the first, then certainly for the comical second goal.

The second half has begun…

Positive start to the second half for West Ham.

They win a corner after Mark Noble’s pot shot is deflected over.

Fellaini nervously clears the ball away for a corner after a cross is dangerously played in.

Good pressure from the Hammers at the start of this second half.

Rooney’s second goal is not quite as spectacular as his first…

JS

Good defensive header away from Carrick after a dangerous ball into the box.

United have dealt extremely well in those kind of circumstances, invariably coping with West Ham’s trademark pressing and long-ball game.

Just over 20 minutes to go now.

United are currently coasting to victory — it’s difficult to see how they can back into this game.

Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney eyes the ball before scoring his first goal.

Carlton Cole comes on for Kevin Nolan, as West Ham make one last desperate throw of the dice.

Rooney won’t be getting the hat-trick. The captain is coming off to be replaced by Danny Welbeck.

Meanwhile, Juan Mata comes off for Javier Hernandez.

United are ensuring the game will be remembered solely for that Rooney goal.

It’s been a dull enough contest for much of the second half, with few clear-cut chances for either side.

Impressive, swift break from United, but Rafael overhits his cross.

United have looked more impressive than they have for much of the season today.

A cross from Demel goes straight into De Gea’s hands.

West Ham are looking increasingly desperate now.

Fellaini gets past James Collins consummately, but then scuffs his shot completely.

The midfielder has impressed for United today.

Right, that’s all from me for now, but we’ll have more reaction to come.
