Injury-time Ardscoil Rís penalty dumps holders CBC out of Munster Senior Cup

Maurice Noonan was the hero for the Limerick school.

CBC (Cork) 7

Ardscoil Rís (Limerick) 9

A MAURICE NOONAN penalty goal more than five minutes into injury time gave Ardscoil Rís victory in the Munster Schools Senior Cup quarter-final at Musgrave Park today, eliminating holders CBC.

The Cork side looked to have done enough to win a dour game when replacement Scott Buckley marked his arrival in the game with a try in the 55th minute, Eoin Monahan converting to put them in front.

They couldn’t augment that advantage, however, as Ardscoil’s defending remained resolute, as it had been throughout the game.

Even so, playing against the wind, the Limerick school’s chances of finding a winning score were running out, but eventually pressure told as they were awarded a penalty just inside the 22 on the right.

Captain and scrum-half Craig Casey, who scored the penalties to put them 6-0 ahead in the first half, had gone off injured but winger Noonan produced a perfect kick at the death, sparking wild celebrations from Ardscoil players and supporters.

Despite winning the toss, Christians opted to play against the wind in the first half and Ardscoil started on the front foot, with Casey opening the scoring in the ninth minute.

Christians out-half James Taylor tried to make things happen for them but they found themselves frustrated by Ardscoil.

Three minutes before half-time, Casey doubled the lead and though they wouldn’t score again until the very end, it was enough.
