St Pat's continue recruitment drive with addition of Dennehy brothers from Cork

Liam Buckley has added two more players to his squad.

ST PATRICK’S ATHLETIC manager Liam Buckley has further bolstered his squad for next season with the acquisition of the Dennehy brothers, Billy and Darren, from Cork City.

The pair become the latest new arrivals at Richmond Park as the Saints look to improve on their fourth place finish in 2016.

Already Keith Treacy, Graham Kelly, Mark Timlin, Dinny Corcoran, Michael Barker and David Cawley have been added to the squad in Inchicore as Buckley looks to enhance his side’s title credentials.

Billy Dennehy’s future at Turner’s Cross was uncertain all year following an on-field arguement with Mark O’Sullivan and the 28-year-old wasn’t offered a new contract by Cork.

The winger was Cork’s top scorer in 2014 and started the FAI Cup final defeat to Dundalk last month. Pat’s become his fourth League of Ireland club after previous spells with Derry City and Shamrock Rovers.

Darren’s move to the capital comes as more of a surprise after the defender became an integral part of John Caulfield’s side as they challenged Dundalk for the title two seasons in a row.

“I’m very pleased that we will have both the lads in our group next season.  They will strengthen our squad and help us compete for honours next season,” Buckley told stpatsfc.com.

“Darren has really developed over the last few seasons with Cork City and is a real physical presence in defence so we are excited to add him to the squad.

“Billy is a top professional and will be a good example to our younger players who can learn from him.

“He has vast experience of playing in the league and in European competition too having been at Cork, Shamrock Rovers and Derry so we know he will be a great addition.”

Meanwhile, Danny Ledwith has joined Premier Division new boys Wexford Youths after a spell with Sligo Rovers.

The new SSE Airtricity League season begins on Friday 6 March.
