THERE WAS CONTROVERSY in this afternoon’s World Cup final, as the referee belatedly awarded a penalty in France’s favour after consulting with the video assistant.
Croatia’s Ivan Perisic was adjudged to have deliberately handballed a ball that was played into the box, though the decision has been criticised in some quarters, with former England striker and BBC presenter Gary Lineker tweeting: “Noooooooo!!!! Can’t give that. Jeez VAR.”
Antoine Griezmann subsequently converted from the spot to put his side 2-1 up.
