THOUGH RED AND white have become the colours synonymous with Cork, the style of jersey worn by the Leesiders in 1916 was very different from today.
And this Saturday, Cork will wear blue to mark the centenary of the Easter Rising when they take on Kilkenny at Pairc Uí Rinn.
The one-off jersey pictured above is similar to the one settled on by Cork in 1913, when GAA congress decided teams should end the practise of wearing the colours of the county champions and register a set style and colour.
JJ Walsh, president of the Cork County Board at the time, was enamoured by the colours on the officers of the Belgian Army when the Cork Hurling team played Tipperary in an exhibition Hurling game as part of the 1912 Celtic Congress in Belgium, according to a press release issued by the county this morning.
In 1919, Cork switched to red and won their first All-Ireland hurling 16 years and applied for permission to retain that shade as the county colours today.
