A good start laid the foundations for Peadar Healy’s side, who had 1-5 on the board before Monaghan got their first score. Having scored the first four points, the lead was augmented when captain Paul Kerrigan found full-forward Peter Kelleher with a good delivery and his pass allowed O’Neill to finish.

Playing with a freedom, Cork pushed further ahead with Kerrigan, O’Neill, Brian O’Driscoll and Mark Collins all on target, but Monaghan gave themselves hope as half-time approached.

Trailing by 1-10 to 0-3, they goaled when Conor McManus’s quick free found Conor McCarthy, who netted from close range and further points from Darren Hughes and McManus (two) made it a four-point game.

That was as close as they would come, however. Cork had points from Collins and O’Neill to lead by 1-12 to 1-6 at the break and that was stretched as Colm O’Driscoll and O’Neill opened the second-half scoring.

McManus remained reliable from frees for Monaghan but the lead was never likely to be eroded.
