Relentless Roscommon defeat Donegal for fourth straight win

The Rossies have almost certainly wrapped up a Division 1 semi-final spot.

Roscommon 1-19

Donegal 0-17

ROSCOMMON CONTINUED THEIR blistering start to life back in the Allianz League Division 1 with another top class showing to see off Donegal in Letterkenny.

Cathal Cregg scored a beautiful goal 10 minutes from time to extinguish any possible Donegal comeback in front of over 7,000 at O’Donnell Park.

The hosts had been second best in the first half but inspired by Michael Murphy, got back to just two points down – 0-15 to 0-13 behind – with time on their side with a quarter of an hour to play.

However, Cregg’s goal and the dismissal of Odhrán MacNiallais for two yellows meant an away win for Roscommon. Another way win.

Roscommon picked off Donegal late on to add to their wins over Cork and Kerry on the road. Their huge support can now plan a trip to Croke Park for the league semi-finals.

Kevin McStay’s side sliced their opponents open time and again in a dominant first half and if anything, Rory Gallagher’s team were blessed to be just five points down at the break, 0-11 to 0-6.

Roscommon passed up on three goal chances in that 35 minutes as Donegal scored just one from play.

Niall Daly missed the best of those when he skewed wide having been set-up by Conor Daly on 29 minutes.

From his deep base, Niall Daly made run after run and Donegal just had too many holes in the bucket defensively. The midfielder scored three, while Ciaran Murtagh scored six over the course of the afternoon as Fintan Cregg chipped in with five.
