Randolph likens 'memorable' Old Trafford performance to the battle of the Alamo

The Ireland goalkeeper put in one of the best performances of his career against Man United.

DARREN RANDOLPH SAVOURED his ‘memorable’ afternoon at Old Trafford yesterday as he stood firm in the face of a Man United onslaught to earn West Ham a valuable point.

The Ireland goalkeeper reinforced his standing as the Hammers’ number one with a man-of-the-match performance to deny Jose Mourinho’s side, and he claimed it was one of the finest of his career.

Randolph performed heroics throughout and pulled off a string of impressive saves, most notably from Marcus Rashford, and his display will have cemented his position as Slaven Bilic’s first choice.

“It’s certainly up there [with my most memorable] although I’d have liked to be less busy. When you’re having a good day, you’re having a good day,” he told West Ham’s website.

“We got the luck today and the saves obviously counted towards something because we got a point.

“I haven’t [got a favourite save] but I’m just happy to have made the saves that count for something and that we’ve got a point out the game.

“We’re very happy. It was tough and like the battle of the Alamo at times, but that’s what it takes when you come to these places.”

Randolph replaced Adrian between the sticks for the Hammers after the recent international break and has impressed in his two outings against Tottenham and then on Sunday.

The Bray shot stopper is showing good form and his performances at club level will be pleasing Martin O’Neill ahead of the resumption of the World Cup qualifiers in March.

West Ham, however, will be Randolph’s primary focus for the next while and he’s looking forward to Wednesday’s return trip to Old Trafford for the EFL Cup quarter-final tie.

“We can take a lot of confidence from this,” he continued. “Even with our performance last week. It wasn’t good enough for the whole game but today we were good enough for 95 minutes and we managed to get a point.

“We should take a lot of confidence going into Wednesday’s game.

“I can only try and perform and show what I can do when I get the chance. If I get the nod, I get the nod and if not I would fully back Adrian and then we’d want to push on again and get ourselves further up the table and progress in the cup.”
