Galway beat Limerick to take second place in 1B, Offaly sneak into final QF spot

Tribesmen set up Waterford clash with three-point win at the Gaelic Grounds.

GALWAY CAPTAIN DAVID Burke scored six points from play as the Tribesmen ensured that they finished second in Division 1B of the Allianz Hurling League at Limerick’s expense.

A 0-24 to 1-18 win at the Gaelic Grounds this afternoon sees Galway set a quarter-final date with Waterford next weekend while Limerick will take on Cork.

Cian Lynch’s first-half goal had Limerick ahead by a point at the break, 1-13 to 0-15, but the hosts were held to just five points in the second half despite having the breeze at their backs.

Galway, led by Burke’s midfield masterclass and 10 points from the stick of Joe Canning, dominated in the final quarter and did enough to seal a fourth win of the campaign.

Elsewhere Offaly registered their first league win, a 1-21 to 2-16 victory against Kerry in Austin Stack Park, and with it booked their place in the quarter-finals.

It is likely to be a poisoned chalice, however, with All-Ireland champions Tipperary awaiting them in the last eight.

Davy Fitzgerald’s Wexford, who clinched promotion to Division 1A a fortnight ago, were four-point winners against Laois.
