Another Grade One win for Walsh and Mullins as Djakadam repeats John Durkan success

The seven-year-old impressed at Punchestown once again.

DJAKADAM DELIVERED YET another Grade One success for Willie Mullins and Ruby Walsh by winning the John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Chase this afternoon.

Last year’s winner, the 4/5 favourite, impressed under Walsh to claim the victory just over a length clear of Gordon Elliott’s Outlander in second.

The success also justified Walsh’s decision to take the ride in Punchestown rather than head to Cork with Douvan for the Hilly Way Chase, which incidentally the six-year-old 1/6 favourite stormed home in for a 22-length win.

Djakadam took on pace setter Sub Lieutenant, under Davy Russell, and moved into a share of the lead five out from home.

Outlander attempted to reel in the reigning champion but ultimately didn’t have the turn of foot to overtake the two-time Cheltenham Gold Cup runner-up.

“I’m happy that he’s learned to find a leg at last, when he made a mistake at the one going down the hill,” Mullins told reporters after the race.

“We’ll probably try to do what we did last year. I’m delighted that he could win that first time out, and he’s making progress.

“I just wanted to get today out of the way first, and we’ll see where we go from here.”
