'Is he having a laugh?': GAA players hit back at Eugene McGee's black card defence

McGee convinced that “vast majority” of people are happy with the black card.

EUGENE MCGEE’S DEFENCE of the black card rule has met with an angry response from GAA players, past and present.

McGee, who was the chairman of the Football Review Committee which first introduced the black card in 2013, admits that the measure needs to be revised but insists that it is fulfilling its purpose of reducing the rate of cynical fouls in Gaelic football.

Speaking to Midlands 103.5, McGee dismissed any suggestions that the measure should be banished and said that the ‘vast majority of people are quite happy with the black card.’

He also took umbrage with comments made by former Donegal boss Jim McGuinness who claimed that the black card is ruining the game.

“1.5% of inter-county footballers have had black cards in this year,” McGee said.

“Jim McGuinness, because he happened to win one All-Ireland, thinks that he’s the high priest of football and the Irish Times gives him space to expound upon his theories.

The black card continues to be a divisive issue in the GAA and was a prominent talking point in the aftermath of the All-Ireland final replay. Dublin’s Jonny Cooper and Mayo’s Lee Keegan were both issued black cards in the first half for apparently cynical tackles.

McGee’s latest comments have not been well received:
