GORDON STRACHAN HAS been afforded a stay of execution by the Scottish FA, who today gave the embattled national team manager their ‘unanimous’ backing despite a poor start to World Cup qualifying.
The 59-year-old’s position was the focus of intense scrutiny after last week’s tame 3-0 loss to England at Wembley. From just four games, the side has racked up four points and sit in fifth place in Group F, ahead of the pointless Malta.
Strachan had met with FA officials after the defeat and discussed the team’s campaign thus far. He expressed disappointment at the results but maintained Scotland could still make it to Russia 2018 via the play-offs.
Seemingly, the board was sufficiently impressed and Chief Executive Stewart Regan issued a statement earlier today.
We support Gordon unanimously in improving our qualification prospects. The board are convinced that he still has the hunger for this challenge and we have four home qualifiers in 2017 to rejuvenate our campaign”.
Scotland have suffered defeat to Slovakia while they were also held to a draw by lowly Lithuania before the loss to England.
They’re next in action against Slovenia in March.
