Former Ireland U21 defender on the bench for Watford as McShane grabs vital equaliser for Reading

There were plenty of Irish goals across the Football League and a familiar goalscorer in the Scottish Premiership.

WITH IRELAND’S WORLD Cup qualifying campaign starting in a couple weeks, here is a quick breakdown of how the Irish players got on across the water this afternoon.

Premier League

Shay Given was in goal as Stoke conceded four goals against a rejuvenated Manchester City. Glenn Whelan also started, while Jon Walters came on for the last 18 minutes in the 4-1 defeat.

It was a much better day for Stephen Ward who completed the full 90 minutes in Burnley’s stunning 2-0 win over Liverpool. David Meyler too can celebrate a job well done, as he started in Hull’s 2-0 win over Swansea.

Damien Delaney was substituted off with an injury just before Tottenham grabbed a late winner over Crystal Palace.

Former Ireland underage international Tommie Hoban was an unused sub for Watford as Chelsea snatched a late winner for the second time in a week.

James McClean was forced to settle for a place on the bench as West Brom entertained Everton. The Derry man came on in the 64th minute as the Baggies failed to claim an equaliser in the 2-1 defeat.

James McCarthy was taken off after 37 minutes for the Toffees in a tactical switch from Ronald Koeman, being replaced by Romelu Lukaku.

Séamus Coleman remains doubtful for Ireland’s World Cup qualifier against Serbia, while Darron Gibson and Aiden McGeady was excluded from the matchday squad.

The Championship

Captain Paul McShane scored a vital equaliser for Reading at home to Chris Hughton’s Brighton. Stephen Quinn was a late sub in the 2-2 draw, but there was still no sign of Richie Towell.

Forward Anthony Pilkington scored his first goal of the season in Cardiff’s 2-2 draw with Fulham.

Joe Mason got his second of the campaign as Wolves came from behind to beat rivals Birmingham. Matt Doherty produced another fine performance from left-back with Stephen Gleeson starting in midfield for the opposition.

Ciaran Clark started at left-back as Newcastle claimed a 1-0 victory at Bristol City. Summer signing Callum O’Dowda was a second-half substitute for the Robins, but Derrick Williams remained on the bench,

Shane Duffy was suspended for Blackburn’s 2-2 draw with Burton Albion. Jack Byrne started his third league game of the season but was replaced just after the hour mark by Darragh LenihanAnthony Stokes also came late on for Owen Coyle’s side, but Damien McCrory was an unused sub for the Brewers.

Keiren Westwood was in goal as Garry Monk claimed his first win as Leeds manager by beating Sheffield Wednesday 2-0.

Cork’s Conor Hourihane was powerless to prevent Barnsley’s defeat at Huddersfield.

Stephen Henderson was in goal for Nottingham Forest as they conceded three goals against Wigan, but luckily for the Dubliner his side scored four in a dramatic encounter.

Irish underage internationals Olamide Shodipo and Reece Grego-Cox were left on the bench as QPR lost 2-0 at home to Preston. Both Greg Cunningham and Alan Browne featured for the Lilywhites.

Winger Anthony Forde was a late sub for Rotherham United as they beat John Egan’s Brentford 1-0. Alan Judge is still several weeks away from making a comeback for the Bees.

Irish duo Cyrus Christie and Richard Keogh kept a clean sheet in Derby’s goalless draw withAston Villa. Jeff Hendrick was ruled out through injury but could still make Ireland’s qualifiers next month.

Best of the Rest

Striker Simon Cox scored his second League One goal of the season in his side’s 1-1 draw against Bristol Rovers.

Former Galway United winger Jay O’Shea scored his second league goal in three games as his Chesterfield side lost at Shrewsbury Town.

Dubliner Shaun Williams also scored in England’s third tier as Millwall beat Sheffield United 2-1 win.

Midfielder Graham Carey enjoyed a prolific campaign in League Two last season with 11 goals for Plymouth, and he is at it again this term this term as he netted twice against Mansfield.

In the Scottish Premiership, Conor Sammon scored one and set up another as Hearts thrashed Inverness 5-1.
