'It would be nice to dream but you just keep going' - John Caulfield focused as City stretch lead

It was a 12th league win last night.

JOHN CAULFIELD SAW his Cork City side’s lead at the top of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division table go to 14 points last night.

The Leesiders scored four second-half goals to see off Finn Harps at Turner’s Cross.

And with Dundalk losing again — this time at Shamrock Rovers — the gap to Stephen Kenny’s side is now a massive 15 points after 12 games with Bray moving into second spot.

But the Leesiders’ boss is working hard to keep his squad’s focus on the job at hand each week — and not get carried away himself quite yet.

“I suppose, we’re all from Cork – typical Cork, before the season starts you’re winning trophies. That’s just the way it is in sport. We have that down here which is brilliant but you have to manage it,” he told reporters after last night’s 12th league win on the trot.

“I’m around a long, long time and being bluntly honest, I’m so focused by the week — that’s just the way I am. I don’t read stuff. I really keep all my energy and strength for training every day and keeping the lads focused and keeping myself totally focused because you know I can’t drift myself.

“Because if I drift, the players might see that and feel I’m not tuned in or missing something.  So I have to be totally focused on what we’re going to do, how we’re going to play and with the management team, I have which are phenomenal.

“So I’m very disciplined about it myself. It would be nice to dream but I’m around too long, you just keep going.”

It’s Galway next up for Cork City when they’ll attempt to make it 13 wins from their first 13 games in the league. Does the run come as a surprise?

“In football, nothing would surprise me,” says the Rebel Army manager. “I played with good teams and not so good teams. I’ve said right from the start, this is our best team.

“I’ve said I expect us to challenge. There was a lot of talk about other teams who would challenge too; I was unsure about that.

“Do you think you’re going to win 12 in a row? Of course you don’t but you don’t think of it like that. You just think of it week by week and where you’re going to be at the break and that’s how you focus it.”
