Liverpool sell Portuguese defender Ilori to Jaap Stam's Reading

The 23-year-old centre-back has signed a three-and-a-half year deal with the promotion-chasing Royals.

READING HAVE COMPLETED the signing of Liverpool defender Tiago Ilori for a reported fee of £3.75 million.

The former Sporting centre-back has signed a three-and-a-half year deal with the Royals, who are currently chasing promotion in the Championship.

Portugal U21 international Ilori moved to Anfield for £6m in September 2013, but failed to make a single Premier League appearance. He managed three starts in the FA Cup, while a loan spell at Aston Villa last season saw him fail to make a single first-team appearance.

Despite that, Reading manager Jaap Stam is confident the 23-year-old can make an impact at the Madejski Stadium.

“Tiago is the type of defender a lot of people like — his technical skill, passing ability, pace, quality and physique. We always want players with those attributes within our squad,” he told Reading’s website.

“In this league, with all the games we need to play, you never know what’s going to happen with injuries and suspensions — so it’s also important we have options and the chance to rotate.

“And looking to the future, you need to seize the opportunity when players like Tiago are available, so we’re very happy that he will be joining us at Reading.”
