IT LOOKS LIKE there will not be a Floyd Mayweather Jr versus Manny Pacquiao rematch any time soon.
Mayweather has retracted his statement that he would be interested in a follow-up to the pair’s 2 May bout, calling Pacquiao a “coward” and a “sore loser”.
“Did I text [ESPN's] Stephen A. Smith and say I will fight him again? Yeah, but I changed my mind,” Mayweather told Showtime on Tuesday in a not-released taped interview that will air on Saturday.
“At this particular time, no, because he’s a sore loser and he’s a coward… If you lost, accept the loss and say, ‘Mayweather, you were the better fighter’.”
The New York Daily News published excerpts from the interview on Thursday.
Pacquiao’s camp revealed the fighter had a tear in his right shoulder following Mayweather’s win in a 12-round decision.
Mayweather said he had no idea Pacquiao was injured during the fight.
“Absolutely not,” Mayweather told Gray. ”He was fast. His left hand was fast. His right hand was fast and he was throwing them both fast and strong.
“I’m not going to buy into the bulls*** … and I don’t want the public to buy into the bulls***. He lost. He knows he lost. I lost a lot of respect for him after all of this.”
Mayweather’s record remains perfect at 48-0. He has said he will retire in September after one more fight to fulfil his contract with Showtime.
