DROGHEDA UNITED WERE relegated from the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division last night and it was clearly a bitter pill to swallow for club captain Mick Daly.

A 5-3 defeat for the Drogs away to Shamrock Rovers, coupled with Limerick’s 3-2 win in Sligo, has condemned the Louth side to First Division football for 2016, while Limerick will meet Finn Harps in a play-off as they bid to preserve their top-flight status.

Mick Daly took to Twitter to express his anger after Drogheda’s loss in Tallaght. While acknowledging his own role in their demise — “I captained a club to be relegated” — Daly stated that Drogheda were “a shambles” and “the worst team in the league by a mile” this season.

The former Manchester City youth also said that eight players “didn’t bother to show up” to training after Drogheda’s 6-0 derby defeat to Dundalk last month: “That was the day we got relegated. No fight, no passion.”
