Monaghan's Paul Finlay retires after 14 years of inter-county service

The Monaghan player collected two Ulster titles throughout his career.

SEASONED MONAGHAN footballer Paul Finlay has announced his retirement from inter-county football after a 14-year stint.

Finlay retires with two Ulster titles to his credit between 2013 and 2015, the first bringing a 25-year drought for provincial success in Monaghan to an end. He also featured in Ulster final defeats in 2007 and 2010.

Throughout his career, Finlay also picked up three National Football League titles and made 168 appearances in a Monaghan shirt in which he thrived as both a midfielder and a forward.

Finlay also captained his club Ballybay to Monaghan SFC glory in 2012 and also won a Sigerson Cup with Sligo IT in 2002. His departure from the inter-county scene comes shortly after fellow stalwart Dick Clerkin also called time on his inter-county retirement.

Speaking to the Irish Independent about his decision, Finlay said:

“I’m comfortable with the decision. I’ve been thinking of it for a while. I know it’s the right time.”
