Séamus Coleman: League of Ireland doesn't get enough credit

The former Sligo Rovers defender has been impressed by the exploits of Dundalk in Europe and says that the Europa League is a good platform.

SÉAMUS COLEMAN SAYS that the League of Ireland “doesn’t get enough credit” and believes that there is no reason why a number of Dundalk players should not earn international recognition.

Speaking to Today FM in the wake of Everton’s 3-1 victory over Middlesbrough, Coleman was asked about Dundalk’s Europa League draw against AZ Alkmaar and the former Sligo Rovers defender revealed his delight at the performance of Stephen Kenny’s team.

“I’m glad you asked that question, because I feel like the Irish league doesn’t get enough credit. Finishing a Premier League game and getting asked that question is great, because they’ve been brilliant,” said Coleman.

“They’ve been the best team in Ireland for the last couple of years and they just missed out on the Champions League. They’ve showed that they play good football. They went down to 10 men the last night [against AZ] yet continued to do what they do and they got the goal, so I’m delighted for them.”

The Republic of Ireland international, who has been handed the captain’s armband by Martin O’Neill following the retirement of Robbie Keane, also believes that playing in the Europa League could help some of Dundalk’s players – Daryl Horgan in particular - make the leap into the international set-up.

“It’s a question for the manager (Martin O’Neill), but I know there are a couple of players who have done really well, especially the little winger Daryl Horgan,” noted the 27-year-old.

“I know the manager has been to watch him a few times and the Europa League is a great platform to show what they can do.”

O’Neill has previously included Dundalk goalkeeper Gary Rogers in a number of squads and has been vocal in his praise of the Lilywhites for their displays in Europe.

The Ireland boss will announce his squad for the upcoming 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Moldova on 23 September .

Coleman continued: ”It can be difficult to pick a player based on League of Ireland performances and that’s coming from someone who played there, but now that they’re playing in the Europa League and showing it against the top teams, why not?

“It’s a big step up [playing in the Europa League] but they look to be very fit. The manager (Stephen Kenny) has them very fit so that’s half the battle.

“They’ve got some good technical players too and hopefully they can do well.”
