England 21-42 Ireland, Six Nations

Kick-off at Twickenham is at 2:10pm.

Good afternoon!

Welcome, one and all, to The 42′s live coverage of Ireland’s Six Nations Round 3 meeting with England at Twickenham — or Allianz Stadium as it’s now known.

Gavan Casey with you here, and I’ll bring you a blow-by-blow account of the action — or close enough to it — from 2:10pm.

England are big favourites, fancied by as many as 11 points with many oddsmakers. Ireland are somewhere between 4/1 and 3/1 to pull off what would be an upset in London.

There’s still a Triple Crown on the line for Andy Farrell’s side who, technically speaking, are not out of the title race just yet. England, meanwhile, will seek to rebound from their shock defeat away to Scotland and get back into the title picture with a home victory today.

A late change to Ireland's 23

Replacement back row Jack Conan has been ruled out through illness, so Connacht’s Cian Prendergast comes into Andy Farrell’s matchday squad.

Prendergast started Ireland’s Six Nations opener away to France but dropped out of the squad for last weekend’s home win over Italy.

The France game was Prendergast’s first Six Nations start, and today will be the 25-year-old’s 10th Test cap.

England captain Maro Itoje is making sure to break in his custom-made boots, designed to mark his 100th cap.

You wouldn’t wish ill on anyone, but if fate was to throw a couple of blisters his way this afternoon, it would be quietly appreciated by this liveblogger.

Still time for a cup of tea, which is my plan now. Kick-off in around 10 minutes’ time. Tentatively looking forward to this one.

Ireland’s Call underway at Twickenham.

God Save the King is finished, and it’s showtime in London!

1′ – ENG 0-0 IRL: George Ford kicks us off at Twickenham!

2′ – ENG 0-0 IRL: George Ford tries a chip over the top in Irish territory and, after some pinball, England knock it on.

Scrum Ireland between their own 10m line and 22′ — and they win a free-kick for an early English engagement.

Tadhg Beirne then steals an English lineout in the hosts’ half!

3′ – ENG 0-0 IRL: A brilliant Irish attack — with some lovely link-up and half-breaks by Gibson-Park and Crowley — puts James Lowe away down the left but he loses concentration and drops the ball cold in a carry as he approaches the English 5′!

There were defenders there but that was a chance. And a superb start with ball in hand by the men in green.

6′ – ENG 0-0 IRL: England get a shove on in the first competitive scrum of the game and win a penalty on their own 5′.

Henry Pollock gives it the big’ne to Josh van der Flier.

7′ – ENG 0-0 IRL: Joe McCarthy blows up the English maul and steals it on the home 22′! Ireland back on the attack!

8′ – ENG 0-0 IRL: Ireland’s multi-phase attack — and another break by Gibson-Park — takes them fairly close, and England concede a penalty on their own 5′.

England 0-3 Ireland

9′ – ENG 0-3 IRL: Crowley slots over the easy three after a bright start by Ireland at Twickenham.

13′ – ENG 0-3 IRL: England go close with their first attack of the game but Ireland make the goal-line stand and a big hit — I think by Ringrose — forces the knock-on!

Ireland exit towards halfway.

Ooft, England showed serious power there as they blasted their way to the Irish 5′.

15′ – ENG 0-3 IRL: An electrifying start to this one. Both sides attacking from transition and trying to get around the edge. Some huge carries, tackles, and plenty of errors — but it’s a breathtaking watch!

A real 50-50 tussle so far.

16′ – ENG 0-3 IRL: England win a scrum penalty against the head just inside the Irish 22′.

But George Ford, who already missed touch earlier, kicks the ball dead!

A huge let-off for Ireland, but that scrum is under immense pressure already.

19′ – ENG 0-3 IRL: Another goal-line stand by Ireland, who are now under the pump!

Exceptional five-metre defence until an English pass doesn’t go to hand and Ringrose seizes on the loose ball before Lowe hacks one clear.

Mightily impressive D by Ireland but it doesn’t feel sustainable.

James Lowe, meanwhile, is coming off injured, with Tommy O’Brien onto the left wing.

A big loss. Thanks heavens for that 5-3 bench, eh?

Try for Ireland! England 0-10 Ireland

20′ – TRYYYYYY FOR IRELAND! JAMISON GIBSON-PARK!

A wonderful break down the right — McCloskey with the skip pass to Baloucoune, who feeds O’Brien on the inside!

Ireland swing left, England concede a penalty, and Gibson-Park taps quickly from 15 and darts over the line!

Wow, incredible!

Crowley, from an acute enough angle on the left, splits the post.

Ireland, from nowhere, lead by 10!

England 0-10 Ireland

22′ – ENG 0-10 IRL: England concede a breakdown penalty on their own ball, just inside their own half, under pressure from Sheehan and Beirne.

Crowley pulls his effort at goal wide left, though. That was eminently makeable. Ireland’s place-kicking woes continue.

22′ – ENG 0-10 IRL: Piardi adjudges Jamie Osborne to have infringed upon Freddie Steward in the air and a nearly-try by the onrushing Jamison Gibson-Park is chalked off before he reaches the line.

Ireland are incensed! It was a borderline call: Osborne can claim he went for the ball, but he didn’t really get close at the same time and just knocked it loose from the Englishman in the air.

Try for Ireland! England 0-15 Ireland; yellow card for Freddie Steward (England)

28′ – TRY FOR IRELAND! ROBERT BALOUCOUNE! OH IT’S SENSATIONAL!

The line-break by Stuart McCloskey! He’s stopped just short! Ireland go left, and Gibson-Park is interfered with illegally — that’s going to be a yellow for England, by the way — but he wrestles free and tees up Baloucoune for the walk-in score in the right-hand corner!

Freddie Steward is sent to the bin.

Crowley’s conversion from the right… is off the mark.

30′ – ENG 0-15 IRL: Van der Flier with the line-break from inside his own 22′!

Gibson-Park is eventually dragged down and Crowley tries to find Baloucoune with the crossfield kick — England get the mark. Not sure that was the right option by the Irish out-half, albeit they didn’t seem to have much in the way of support after such a quick break!

This is incredible by Ireland but they really should be further ahead.

Meanwhile, referee Andrea Piardi has pulled a muscle and is going to have to be replaced! Pierre Brousset will sub in as the man in the middle.

30′ – ENG 0-15 IRL: Jamie George replaces Luke Cowan-Dickie, who doesn’t appear to be injured.

Try for Ireland! England 0-22 Ireland

30′ – TRY FOR IRELAND! TOMMY O’BRIEN! THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE!

What a move! Baloucoune feints and goes past Freeman and it’s a simple score from there: he feeds O’Brien who sprints over the line for Ireland’s third try!

Crowley converts from the left and Ireland have a four-score lead at Twickenham!

35′ – ENG 0-22 IRL: McCloskey denies England a try in transition by batting back and English pass inside the away 22′ at the crucial moment!

What an intervention again by the Ulsterman.

37′ – ENG 0-22 IRL: England with the lineout platform just outside the Irish 5′ – and they appear to make a mess of it, but Ryan is pinged for playing Itoje in the air. Looked harsh, honestly.

England will go again — but Tadhg Beirne says no! He turns them over with the jackal on his own line! Incredible!

38′ – ENG 0-22 IRL: Freddie Steward back on after his sin-binning.

Jack van Poortvliet on at scrum-half for the injured Alex Mitchell too, by the way.

39′ – ENG 0-22 IRL: Ireland almost break away again through McCarthy but sub referee Brousset is informed of a knock-on by the Irish lock just before he burst clear.

Scrum England inside the Irish 22′. They’ll seek a scrum pen here surely.

Marcus Smith on for Freddie Steward, doesn’t appear to be a HIA.

Try for England! Half-time: England 7-22 Ireland

41′ – TRY FOR ENGLAND! FRASER DINGWALL CRASHES OVER ON THE CUSP OF HALF-TIME!

Sustained English pressure, and brilliant Irish defence is eventually breached on the left-hand side.

George Ford converts, and that’ll take us to the break.

England stay alive with the clock red.

What an incredible half of rugby by Ireland, on both sides of the ball.

Tries by Jamison Gibson-Park, Robert Baloucoune and Tommy O’Brien — with a riposte from Fraser Dingwall — leave them in a commanding position at the break.

Crowley has left some points on the tee, unfortunately, and England will feel they’re still in this having created several opportunities.

Ireland have looked so dangerous with ball in hand. It’s been a cracker.

Catch you in about 15!

Second half

41′ – ENG 7-22 IRL: Jack Crowley restarts the action in London. A massive 40 minutes in store. Ireland in charge, but England will feel they breathed life into this one with the Dingwall try on half-time.

Yellow card: Henry Pollock (England)

42′ – ENG 7-22 IRL: Wonderful start to the second half by Ireland!

Doris with an explosion through the middle and Ireland get within inches!

Pollock is marched for 10 minutes for not releasing in the tackle, and Ireland have a penalty on the English 5′!

Try for Ireland! England 7-29 Ireland

43′ – TRY FOR IRELAND! DAN SHEEHAN! THERE’S THE BONUS POINT!

Ireland go close with the tap and go, recycle, and Sheehan crashes over centre-left for his 14th Test try!

Crowley converts and Ireland lead by 22 again!

44′ – ENG 7-29 IRL: Arundell is pinged for obstructing Baloucoune during a kick chase.

Crowley line-kicks Ireland to the English 22′. Another chance.

46′ – ENG 7-29 IRL: Ireland’s attack goes nowhere on this occasion and ends with a forward offload by Jeremy Loughman to James Ryan.

Scrum England on their own 22′.

46′ – ENG 7-29 IRL: Andy Farrell changes his props, with Tom O’Toole and Finlay Bealham on for Loughman and Furlong.

48′ – ENG 7-29 IRL: England win the scrum penalty as Ireland come under pressure again. Ford finds touch up towards halfway.

49′ – ENG 7-29 IRL: England win another penalty in the lineout. Ford this time drills them deep into the Irish 22′.

Twickenham begins to come alive again.

51′ – ENG 7-29 IRL: Ireland defend their line again and Jamie George is pinged for a croc-roll!

Crowley boots Ireland to touch up at their own 10′.

A big escape, but excellent defence again.

53′ – ENG 7-29 IRL: England have a lineout inside the Irish 22′ after an accidental-offside penalty by Ireland — a rare error.

Another chance for England.

Try for England! England 14-29 Ireland; yellow card for Jamie Osborne (Ireland)

55′ – TRY FOR ENGLAND! Ollie Lawrence goes over between the sticks as England’s pressure eventually tells.

Jamie Osborne is binned for not releasing on the ground early in the move.

Ford converts. England are not done yet!

58′ – ENG 14-29 IRL: England knock on outside their own 22′.

Scrum Ireland, and a chance to build back some pressure of their own provided they can win their own ball. They win a free-kick after three resets.

59′ – ENG 14-29 IRL: Penalty Ireland just outside the England 22′! An infringement at the breakdown by the hosts.

Ireland are going to kick for goal.

England 14-32 Ireland

59′ – ENG 14-32 IRL: Crowley chips over the three. Ireland lead by 18 at Twickenham.

62′ – ENG 14-32 IRL: England with the attacking lineout inside Ireland’s half as we enter the last quarter.

63′ – ENG 14-32 IRL: England go close down the right but Tommy O’Brien and Rob Baloucoune come to the rescue!

A huge defensive intervention!

Irish lineout on their own 5′ — and they subsequently win a penalty on the ground. Crowley line-kicks them up towards the away 10′.

England 14-35 Ireland

66′ – ENG 14-35 IRL: A wonderful kick chase by Baloucoune into the English 22′ and Tadhg Beirne puts England in all kinds of bother a breakdown later. Penalty Ireland in front of the posts!

Crowley dinks it over and Ireland stretch their lead to 21!

68′ – ENG 14-35 IRL: HERE COME IRELAND AGAIN!

Gibson-Park chips into space in transition! Then wins the jackal turnover on the English 5′! What a piece of play!

Ireland go to the line. Put-in on the English 5′!

Try for Ireland! England 14-42 Ireland

69′ – TRY FOR IRELAND! JAMIE OSBORNE! THIS IS A BATTERING, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!

Relentless Irish pressure eventually tells and Osborne slams the ball down near the posts! Crowley converts, and ‘Olé Olé’ rings around Twickenham!

72′ – ENG 14-42 IRL: Caelan Doris wins a jackal penalty between the Irish 22′ and 10′.

This has been extraordinary by Ireland.

73′ – ENG 14-42 IRL: Marcus Smith with the intercept and it looks like he’s going to take it to the house — but Stu McCloskey hares after him and somehow drags him into touch!

Ah, that’s unbelievable by the Ulster 12!

However, Doris knocks on in the lineout — and England win a penalty.

74′ – ENG 14-42 IRL: Ireland force the knock-on in contact on their own 5′!

This defence is absolute savagery!

The travelling support are going nuts.

Try for England! England 21-42 Ireland

76′ – Try for England! Sam Underhill with the consolation score.

A couple of errors by Ireland late on and Underhill eventually gets over, Ford converts.

England chasing a four-try bonus point now.

80′ – ENG 21-42 IRL: Scrum penalty for England inside their own half. Ford line-kicks them up towards the Irish 10′. Last play.

Full-time: England 21-42 Ireland

Apologies, some technical issues at the very end there — but rest assured, Ireland have pulled off a famous win at Twickenham.

What an incredible performance.
