Bayern defender arrested on suspicion of burning down his own house

Breno, 21, was taken into police custody in Munich on Saturday.

BAYERN MUNICH’S BRAZILIAN defender Breno has been arrested after a fire devastated his luxury villa in Grunewald, causing millions of euro in damage.

The 21-year-old, who joined the Bavarian giants from Sao Paolo in 2008, was taken into police custody on Saturday amid fears that he might flee the country.

District attorney Thomas Steinkraus-Koch said there was “a precise suspicion” linking the centre-half to attempted arson, according to AFP reports.

Nobody was injured in the blaze which started in one of the house’s guest rooms before spreading last Monday evening. Neither Breno’s wife, Renata, nor his three children were at home at the time.

Breno has only made 21 league appearances for Bayern in three years and has spent much of the last 18 months on the sideline with a cruciate knee injury which could threaten his career.

On Friday evening, the Bavarian club confirmed that they had previously advised the Brazilan to seek psychological help for the personal problems arising out of his injury.
