Big gig: Simon Easterby named new Scarlets head coach

The former Ireland international takes over from Nigel Davies at Parc y Scarlets.

FORMER IRELAND INTERNATIONAL Simon Easterby is to become the Scarlets new head coach after the Welsh club confirmed Nigel Davies’s departure for Gloucester.

Davies, who has been the head coach at Parc y Scarlets since June 2008, was announced today as Gloucester’s director of rugby on a three-year term, replacing former boss Bryan Redpath who has moved to Sale.

Easterby steps up to the role after two highly successful years as defence coach under Davies. The Yorkshire-born flanker won 65 caps in the back row for Ireland and played more than 200 games of club rugby for the Scarlets before moving into the backroom in 2010.

He takes charge of a three-man team which includes his successor as forwards coach Danny Wilson, backs coach Mark Jones, and strength and conditioning coach Brad Harringon.

Announcing his move to Kingsholm in a statement this morning, Davies endorsed Easterby’s appointment as head coach.

“My decision [to leave] is underpinned by my belief that the coaching group at the Scarlets has progressed significantly over the past two seasons,” he said.

Simon and Mark with the added impetus of Danny Wilson, will create a talented, dynamic and energetic coaching environment and I have no doubt they will move it forward successfully.

I wish Simon all the very best and he has my full support in his appointment as the new Head Coach.
