Blue blood: Gilroy believes there's more to come from O'Gara

The Dublin forward clocked up 1-5 in an impressive performance at O’Moore Park on Saturday night.

DUBLIN MANAGER PAT Gilroy was full of praise for forward Eoghan O’Gara after his man-of-the-match performance in the Allianz National Football League win over Laois on Saturday night.

The reigning All-Ireland champions won by a five-point margin at O’Moore Park and the Templeogue/Synge Street clubman scored 1-5 from open play in what was arguably his best display at interprovincial level to date.

O’Gara has received criticism for his finishing ability in the past but continued the form he showed for DCU in the Sigerson Cup this year against Justin McNulty’s side and Gilroy believes that the 25-year-old can continue in a similar vein through this season if he stays fit.

“Eoghan is a guy that we have a lot faith in,” Gilroy said on GAA.ie. “We always respect the contribution he makes because he always gives 100 per cent.

He has a lot of football in him and it’s the first time in the two years that we have been involved with him that he’s been clear of injury. We wouldn’t be shocked by him doing that.”

Dublin’s starting XV was deprived of four of the forwards who took to the field against Kerry in September’s All-Ireland final and Gilroy emphasised the importance of having strength in depth at this early stage in the league.

“It is important that we have a panel,” he added. “We test that during the league and get as much out of fellas. We know we have more resources than we had last summer.

“If we got through the league and hadn’t got fellas games it would be a waste.

“So this is important and it is good we get performances like that because some day maybe the two of them (Alan and Bernard Brogan) would be injured and we would have to play without them. So it is no harm at all.”
