CLARE AND LIMERICK’S clash next Sunday is evoking plenty memories of the spellbinding hurling encounters the pair served up in the 90s.

Ger Loughnane was a central figure in the drama and the ex-Clare boss recalled those days on Off The Ball on Newstalk last night.

And he revealed the unique quote Ciaran Carey delivered in the aftermath of the epic winning point he struck to settle the 1996 Munster semi-final.

“Ciaran Carey, the hero of the day, was inside sitting down and I’m nearly sure he was smoking a cigarette. He was being asked a question by some journalist and he said a line that I didn’t figure out what he meant by it then and I still don’t figure out.

“He said, ‘a lot of crows had to be plucked out there today’. I didn’t know what to make of it but the line stuck in my head afterwards.”

“It’ll be remembered for as long as hurling is played. When I look back at my time as a player and as a manager, that will always be among one of my greatest memories of that time. It was a brilliant occasion.”
