Drama at the Cross as Cork stun Derry with two late goals

Kenny Browne’s late winner keeps Cork four points behind leaders Dundalk.

Cork City 2-1 Derry City

CORK CITY MADE it six straight league wins as they beat Derry City at Turner’s Cross on Friday night – but they left it late.

With five minutes of normal time left, the Rebel Army trailed to Niclas Vemmelund’s 56th-minute goal for Derry and chances to draw level were being wasted, with Seán Maguire wide with a free header in the 74th minute.

The levelling goal from Danny Morrissey came when he stooped down to head home Greg Bolger’s free kick from the left, and the majority of the 2,856 crowd were sent into raptures, but it was to get even better.

They continued to press and, when a corner was won on the left flank, again Bolger had a good delivery and centre-back Kenny Browne got his head to the ball to divert it home, ensuring that John Caulfield’s side remain four points behind Dundalk.

Derry, who had already beaten Cork in the both the league and EA Sports Cup, were on course to do that for a third time when right-back Vemmelund slid in unmarked to divert Barry McNamee’s corner to the net early in the second half.

Vemmelund had had Derry’s best, and only, chance of the first half as Cork had the better of the play, but struggled to test Ger Doherty.

Centre-back and captain Ryan McBride was outstanding for Derry and it looked like he would lead the defensive effort to a clean sheet, but the hosts had other ideas.
