Cork City 3

Finn Harps 1

EARLY GOALS FROM Gearóid Morrissey and Seán Maguire helped Cork City get back to winning ways in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division as they defeated Finn Harps at Turner’s Cross tonight.

Having had three successive draws against Sligo Rovers, Wexford Youths and Galway United, John Caulfield’s side had exorcised some demons in beating Waterford United 7-0 in the EA Sports Cup on Monday night and they continued the momentum here. Morrissey’s opener came inside two minutes as his long-range shot deflected past Richard Brush and soon after that, Maguire headed home Stephen Dooley’s corner.

While no further goals followed in the first half, the flow of the game was all one way.

Early in the second half, City were reduced to 10 men when centre-back Kenny Browne was dismissed after an altercation with Dave Scully following a corner where Brush was left injured — he would have to go off — but Garry Buckley slotted into defence seamlessly.

City continued to dominate and got a third when Karl Sheppard benefited from nice play by Maguire to fire home. Ryan Curran then scored a late Harps consolation.

CORK CITY: Mark McNulty; John Dunleavy, Alan Bennett, Kenny Browne, Kevin O’Connor; Greg Bolger, Gearóid Morrissey; Steven Beattie (Danny Morrissey 77), Garry Buckley, Stephen Dooley (Karl Sheppard 57); Seán Maguire (Mark O’Sullivan 77).

FINN HARPS: Richard Brush (Ciarán Gallagher 61); Ehtan Boyle, Damien McNulty, Packie Mailey, Ciarán Coll; Ryan Curran, Raymond Foy (Tony McNamee 10), Gareth Harkin, Seán Houston, Adam Hanlon (Liam Flatley 25); Dave Scully.

Referee: Pádraigh Sutton (Clare).
