Davy Fitz: 'In Clare we do things properly, there's a code of discipline and that's it'

The Banner have been in the spotlight over the last week.

DAVY FITZGERALD INSISTS the Clare management are ‘very fair’ in applying a code of discipline and he is determined their squad will build on yesterday’s rousing league win over Dublin.

Fitzgerald saw his 14-man Clare team come from behind yesterday against Dublin to record their first league win of the campaign.

It was good news after a turbulent week that saw Clare hurlers Davy O’Halloran and Nicky O’Connell depart the Banner panel. O’Halloran claimed in an interview with The Irish Times that they had been ‘humiliated’ by management and that another senior player had not been punished for a breach of discipline.

“In Clare we do things properly, there’s a code of discipline and that’s it,” revealed Fitzgerald after yesterday’s game.

“We’ll just drive on from this [victory]. The bottom line is that we as a management are very fair in what we do. There are rules there and that’s it. Listen, I’m very, very happy that we have done everything correct and I know that the players are very happy with that as well.

“The bottom line is that the lads [Davy O’Halloran and Nicky O’Connell] aren’t bad, they’re good lads and I wish them all the best with their clubs going forward and fair play to them.”

Fitzgerald praised his team’s character in triumphing yesterday.

“It was a good win, I’m delighted with the win but it’s nothing I didn’t expect. We went down six points I don’t know how many times in that game and still came back, they showed serious character and that’s there in them.

“I think in the last game or two, they’ve probably got a bit caught up in themselves. We watched the Tipperary game a number of times and it came down to the mistakes we made and that’s it but I suppose ye guys [media] have to write stories and there’s nothing we can do about it.

“But as I said to the lads, we don’t need to listen to anyone else, we just need to concentrate on our own thing. We’re an honest team so we are and we still have stuff to improve on from today and we will. The only panic that was out there was from guys that want to create it, that’s all.”
