Boxing writer died in his sleep last night after a long battle with cancer.

REPUTED SPORTS WRITER George Kimball passed away last night after a long struggle with cancer, according to his friend Thomas Hauser.

The writer had been suffering from the disease since 2005, having been diagnosed with esophageal cancer in summer of that year.

Despite his illness, Kimball continued writing prolifically. His work included writing a book (Four Kings), editing two anthologies and putting together a collection of his columns entitled ‘Manly Art’.

He wrote a weekly column in The Irish Times entitled ‘America at Large’ since 1997 and also spent 25 years as a sports columnist for the Boston Herald before retiring in 2005.

In addition to his work in print journalism, Kimball also co-hosted a number of sports talk radio programmes in the Boston area from the mid-1980s onwards.
