FBD League: Sligo and Leitrim qualify for decider

There’s going to be a novel pairing in next weekend’s final of the pre-season football competition in Connacht.

Section A

Sligo booked their place in the FBD League final after triumphing in the winner-takes-all clash against Galway in Enniscrone yesterday by 0-9 to 1-4.

Former Galway All-Ireland winner Kevin Walsh saw his Sligo team recover from a slow start when they trailed by 1-2 to 0-1.

Peadar Óg Ó Gríofa notched two points early on for Galway before his attacking colleague Danny Cummins fired the ball to the net for what transpired to be the only goal of the game.

Yet Galway failed to score for the remainder of the half with Sligo kicking three points without reply from Mark Brehony (2) and Brian Egan.

And after trailing by 1-2 to 0-4 at the break, Sligo dominated the early stages of the second-half with four points without reply – Egan (2) and Brehony (2) – enabling them to push clear by 0-8 to 1-2.

Galway rallied courtesy of a brace of points from Sean Armstrong but Shane McManus sealed Sligo’s victory with a late point.

The other game in the group, between IT Sligo and NUI Galway in Ballyhaunis, was not going to affect the outcome of the group but did serve as useful preparation for both third-level colleges ahead of their upcoming Sigerson Cup clashes.

IT Sligo ultimately enjoyed a 0-15 to 0-13 victory after having lead by 0-9 to 0-6 at the break.

Section B

Leitrim booked the final place on offer from this section with their third consecutive victory when they met GMIT yesterday in Ballinamore.

And once again Leitrim prevailed by a narrow one-point margin, 0-10 to 1-6, as they recovered from trailing at half-time by 1-3 to 0-5 after Conor Kelly had hit the net for GMIT.

But George Dugdale and Barney Breen saw their team display the grit in the second-half to fashion a victory.

The other match in the section took place in Ballyhaunis with Roscommon and Mayo playing out a draw, 1-7 to 0-10.

Mayo burst from the traps with Aidan O’Shea and Jason Doherty bagging early points and when Ballinrobe’s Alan Murphy notched a point, they were enjoying a 0-5 to 0-2 lead.

Yet Roscommon fought back to lead by 1-4 to 0-6 at half-time with Cathal Cregg striking their goal. John Evan’s side stayed in front during the second-half and enjoyed a 1-7 to 0-8 lead with two minutes remaining after points from Michael Finneran, Donie Smith and Fintan Cregg.

But Murphy notched two late frees to rescue a draw for Mayo.
