Galway and Cavan will face off next Sunday in battle to claim promotion to Division 1

It’ll be either Terry Hyland’s team or Kevin Walsh’s side that will join Tyrone in the top tier.

GALWAY AND CAVAN will face off next Sunday in Kingspan Breffni Park in a game that will decide which of the pair will clinch promotion to Division 1 of the Allianz football league.

With Tyrone having already secured promotion, it will be the Terry Hyland’s side or Kevin Walsh’s outfit that will join them.

Cavan claimed a 1-17 to 0-15 success over Laois at home today that puts them into second place on the table and as they are on eight points, a draw next Sunday will secure promotion for them.

Galway played out a 0-15 to 0-15 draw against Fermanagh in Tuam Stadium this afternoon which leaves them on seven points and means they must claim victory next Sunday to secure a Division 1 place in 2017.

Seanie Johnston struck 1-3 today in Cavan’s victory while Gearoid McKiernan hit 0-3 and there was 0-2 apiece for Michael Argue and Jack Brady. Donie Kingston fired 0-4 for Laois while John O’Loughlin and Evan O’Carroll weighed in with 0-3 apiece.

Cavan were in front by 0-5 to 0-3 when Johnston pounced for the only goal of the game and they enjoyed a 1-9 to 0-8 advantage at the break before claiming an eventual five-point success.

14-man Fermanagh hauled Galway back for a draw in Tuam with Declan McCusker landing the late point that tied the teams. Fermanagh had been reduced to 14 men when they lost corner-back Niall Cassidy to a red card six minutes after the restart.

Galway were in front 0-6 to 0-3 by the 23rd minute yet their lead was cut to 0-7 to 0-6 by half-time. There was disappointment for the Tribesmen at not making the extra man count in the second-half.

Damien Comer (0-4), Gary Sice (0-3), Patrick Sweeney (0-2) and Shane Walsh (0-2) were the leading scorers for Galway. Tomas Corrigan hit 0-7 for Fermanagh and Sean Quigley chalked up 0-3.

In the battle to beat the drop, Meath are still in relegation trouble after they drew 2-12 apiece with Derry today.

The result leaves Derry on six points ahead of Fermanagh on five, Meath and Armagh are on four while Laois are bottom on three. Next Sunday’s game between Laois and Meath will be a pivotal one here.

Ryan Bell’s last-gasp point for Derry today clinched a draw for them against Meath in Owenbeg. Meath were in front 2-4 to 1-6 at half-time with Mickey Newman and Andrew Tormey firing home goals while Daniel Heavron raised a green flag for Derry.

Niall Loughlin struck the second goal for the Oak Leaf county after half-time. Newman hit 1-6 overall for Meath and Dalton McDonagh chipped in with 0-3 but while Tormey edged Meath ahead late on, it was Bell who hit the levelling score.
