Ireland come up short in Kenya

A poor performance from Ireland’s batsmen ensured the first of two scheduled ODI World Cup qualifiers at Mombasa Sports Club went the way of the home side.

THE SECOND MATCH of the Irish cricket team’s Kenyan sojourn has ended in defeat.

Playing in the first of  the weekend’s two ICC World Cricket League Championship fixtures against the African side, Phil Simmons’ men stumbled to their second dismal batting display of the week to pull up short of the 50-over-mark with a run total of 200.

While the Irish attack, led by Albert van der Merwe, succeeded in manufacturing a miraculous recovery when the sides met in the Intercontinental Cup on Monday, the shorter format admitted of no similar heroics.

The home team coasted to a score of 201/3 to secure a seven-wicket victory and share of fourth place in the updated league table. Ireland remain tied with Scotland at the summit of the classification.

Mombasa Sports Club will host the sides’ second ODI meeting this Monday.
