Irish Eye: Best on the double for Newcastle

Premier League

Shay Given (Aston Villa 0-0 Wolves) Given helped Aston Villa to maintain their unbeaten start to the season with a clean sheet at home to Wolves on Saturday. Although the Donegal stopper strained his back during the game, the injury is not thought to be serious and he is expected to join up with his international team-mates tomorrow.

Leon Best (Newcastle 2-1 Fulham) Leon Best sent a reminder to Giovanni Trapattoni yesterday, scoring both goals in Newcastle’s 2-1 win. His first was a toe-poke from close range after Yohan Cabaye’s strike came back off Mark Schwartzer’s crossbar, while some neat control in the box allowed him to turn and finish from ten yards for his second.

Michael Harriman (Wigan 2-0 QPR) English-born teenager Michael Harriman made his first Premier League appearance for QPR on Saturday, replacing Fitz Hall for the final half-hour.

Npower Championship

Robbie Brady (Hull City 1-0 Reading) Was it a shot or was it a cross? Robbie Brady doesn’t really care. The youngster’s 73rd-minute inswinger deceived Reading keeper Adam Federici and ended up in the back of the net, giving Hull their first home win since April.

Keith Andrews (Ipswich 2-1 Leeds) Keith Andrews was on the mark for loan club Ipswich again this weekend, this time in happier circumstances. It was his deflected injury-time effort which gave the Tractor Boys only their second win of the season, dragging them into mid-table.

David Connolly (Leicester 3-2 Southampton) David Connolly can’t stop scoring, it seems. Saturday’s header, from an Adam Lallana cross in the 53rd minute, was his fourth goal of the season. However, it wasn’t enough to prevent the Saints from falling to their first defeat.

Adam Rooney (Watford 2-2 Birmingham) Rooney was on hand to open the scoring in the 39th minute on Saturday, finishing from close range after David Murphy’s knock-down.

League One

Alan Lee (Huddersfield 3-0 Wycombe) Alan Lee rediscovered his goalscoring touch against Wycombe, heading home a brace — his first league goals for the club — after he was introduced as a second-half substitute.

Scottish Premier League

Gavin Gunning (St Johnstone 3-3 Dundee Utd) Dubliner Gavin Gunning rescued a point for Dundee United, completing their comeback with a headed equaliser in the 83rd minute.
